Sir Trevor Phillips: From Myth to Momentum: Building Black Leadership at the Top

At Chaucer, we proudly celebrated Black History Month 2025 under the theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” This year’s theme honoured the strength, resilience, and rich cultural heritage of Black communities, while spotlighting the ongoing journey toward equity and empowerment.

As part of our celebrations, we were honoured to host Sir Trevor Phillips for a keynote event titled “From Myth to Momentum: Building Black Leadership at the Top.” Held at our London office, the event brought together colleagues and guests from across the London Market to engage in meaningful dialogue about the importance of Black leadership in our industry and society.

Keynote Address by Sir Trevor Phillips

The evening began with a powerful keynote from Sir Trevor Phillips, who shared reflections on his upbringing as a Black boy navigating life between British Guyana and the UK. His family’s migration journey and cultural transitions offered a deeply personal lens into identity, belonging, and resilience.

Sir Trevor explored the complexities of discussing racism in both professional and personal settings. He encouraged leaders to approach these conversations with honesty and empathy, emphasising the importance of storytelling and lived experience in fostering inclusive leadership.

Sir Trevor Phillips
“This month is more than about recounting dates, more than reciting the names of famous people, but it is an opportunity for us to understand one of the great dilemmas of our time...how do we live with each other?”

Sir Trevor’s remarks positioned Black History Month as more than a time for remembering milestones or celebrating prominent figures. He invited us to reflect on how we live together, urging us to move beyond recognition and towards meaningful engagement. His words challenged us to consider the everyday choices that shape our communities and to approach them with empathy, honesty and a shared sense of humanity.

Panel Discussion: Industry Perspectives on Inclusive Leadership

Following the keynote, a panel discussion brought together senior leaders from Chaucer and the wider market:

  • Anders Rox Hansen – Managing Director, Strata
  • James Wright – Group Chief Financial Officer
  • Karen Reid – Group Chief People Officer
  • Bola Adesina – Group Inclusion Manager
  • Moderated by Andrew Pearce – Non-Executive Director

The panel explored how organisations can actively support the development of Black leadership at senior levels. Key themes included:

  • Representation as a catalyst for cultural transformation
  • Dismantling systemic barriers to access and progression
  • Inclusive talent development and fairer pathways to leadership
  • Allyship and influence; encouraging senior leaders to champion equity
  • Cross-industry collaboration to build sustainable progress

These conversations are already translating into action at Chaucer. Through initiatives focused on inclusive hiring, leadership development, and cultural awareness, we are taking meaningful steps toward fostering a more equitable workplace.

Celebrating Culture and Connection

Guests rounded off the evening with networking over African-Caribbean food and drinks, continuing the conversation in a relaxed and celebratory atmosphere. The event was not only a moment of reflection but also a celebration of culture, connection, and community.

Why It Matters

Events like this are part of our ongoing commitment to cultural awareness, inclusion, and equity. At Chaucer, we believe that celebrating heritage and empowering future progress go hand in hand. By amplifying voices and fostering dialogue, we continue to build a workplace where everyone can stand firm in power and pride.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the powerful conversations sparked by this event, we remain committed to turning dialogue into action. Chaucer will continue to champion inclusive leadership, create space for underrepresented voices, and invest in initiatives that build equity across our industry.

Black History Month is not just a moment, it’s a movement. We’re proud to stand firm in power and pride, driving momentum for lasting change.
